Why I Want to Be a Doctor
Arjundhara, Jhapa — November 2025
There is a small clinic near the edge of our town. It has peeling paint, a wooden bench outside, and a doctor who comes three days a week. I grew up watching people walk miles to sit on that bench.
Some of them never made it in time and some.....
That image never left me. Not when I was studying late into the night, not when I was writing poems about longing and loss. I came to understand that medicine was not just a profession, it was a form of love and will always remain....
The Moment I Decided
It was not one single moment. It was a series of little memories.
My grandfather once said to me, "There are hands that cut and hands that heal. Choose yours carefully." I did not understand it then, but I do now. Seeing him in his eighties and his veiny loosen hand, I get courage.
Watching local healthcare workers move with calm urgency, carry the weight of lives in their instruments, and speak softly even in the satire of the biggest crisis-I saw my passion in them; something I wanted to become.
Medicine and Meaning
I have been reading about the history of medicine lately. From Hippocrates to Ibn Sina, from Florence Nightingale to present day frontline workers in Nepal; the thread that runs through all of them is service and only service.
Not fame, Not wealth, Service.
Don't matter the blemish of blood,
Neither the phenolic aroma of the scrubs.
A doctor in a rural hill district of Nepal earns far less than a doctor in Kathmandu. But the lives they touch are just as real. The tears they see and the happiness they create is raw and real.
That is where I truly want to be.
What I Am Doing About It
Currently, I am preparing for the MBBS entrance examination i.e.CEE. Biology is my favourite and but Physics has become less of an enemy over time. The road is long and full of practice papers, but every question I get right, it feels like one step closer to my goal.
I also write poems and stories. They remind me that beyond the biochemistry and anatomy diagrams, medicine is ultimately about stories; the story of a patient, a family, a community trying to survive and thrive.
If you are also on this path, feel free to reach out. Let us study and dream together.
