Lub-dub, lub-dub

Lub-dub, lub-dub, the cardiac valves closing. A poem on facing the primary trial of the first incision.

Lub-dub, lub-dub

Lub-dub, lub-dub,
The cardiac valves closing,
While the patient's vitals are decreasing,
Your own heart rate ascends to its height.
Diaphoresis sets in,
Tremors grip your hands,
Yet, you remain perfectly still.
With a deep, measured breath,
You take up the shears,
And the surgical instruments,
To preserve a human life,
The ultimate, lifelong directive.
There you stand, facing the primary trial,
As the hours passes by.
Hemostasis achieved, success is attained,
You gave everything you had,
In service of the patient.
With blemish of blood,
And the phenolic aroma of the theater,
Staining your sterile scrubs,
But,you care for nothing else,
Having successfully executed,
Your very first incision,
Guided by profound compassion,
Famishing for clinical excellence.
